Killdeer are quite plentiful in northern Pennsylvania in the spring. They will often lay their eggs in gravel or open fields. One day I got a call from a friend who had found a clutch of eggs in the stones along the edge of a relatively dry creek bed. I got to observe the mother’s activity around the nest for several days before they hatched. The stones were incredibly varied in color and texture, yet the eggs blended in so well that each day I had a difficult time spotting them, even though I knew where they were. One morning when I went, the eggs had hatched and the chicks sat in the exact same position that the eggs were in. When I approached they scattered and hid under the rocks, blending in so well that I was only able to find one of them.
