If you’re just beginning to get into the world of hiking, we have some tips to keep you safe and happy… and some PA Wilds-made products that will help you celebrate and remember those great outdoor experiences! Remember, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and the most important tip for starting hiking is, well, to start hiking!
There are lots of different kinds of hiking, and the intensity level can vary from person to person. Hiking can be as extreme as an overnight backpacking trip, but it can also look like a walk with your dog on a state park trail or a short and flat stroll on a rail trail with your whole family.
Especially when you first begin hiking, take it slow and start easy. It’s easy to underestimate how exhausting an all-day hike can be or how sore your ankles might feel after some steep terrain. Start out with a hike that has either no or very little elevation change. Aim for hikes of 2 or 3 miles at first (or shorter), and build your way up to longer or more challenging hikes.
Give yourself more time than what you think you need to complete a hike. Hiking guidebooks or websites often give estimates of how long a trail might take you to complete. However, realize that this is just an estimate. If you are planning to hike later in the afternoon, be sure to give yourself a “cushion” of extra time. You don’t want to end your hike by walking in the dark!
Check the weather forecast before you go out on your hike in the PA Wilds. The weather can change in a moment, so be prepared with extra layers or gear. If it’s hot and sunny, be sure to pack extra water and sunscreen. If the weather could be dangerous, it’s always better to delay your hike for another day.
Wear the right clothing for your hike. Choose supportive shoes, such as hiking boots or sneakers that have support around your ankles. Even if it’s hot, you shouldn’t go hiking in sandals or flip flops. Choose clothing that matches the weather, and wear something made of moisture-wicking fabric that will help keep sweat away from your body.
Plan your route and know what kind of amenities are available. Do research about your hiking path, whether that means looking online or in a guidebook, reading signage, or asking park staff. Knowing whether there are bathrooms nearby and where the closest town is will help you determine what you might need to bring along for your hike.
Speaking of things to bring along, don’t forget to pack your bag accordingly! Water is one of the most important things you can bring on a hike. Although some guides tell you to bring a half-liter of water for every hour you plan to hike, new hikers should plan to bring at least one liter per hour (and more if it’s hot out). Bring snacks that keep your energy up, such as protein bars or nuts.
A map, small first aid kit, emergency kit, sunscreen and bug repellent are also great choices to bring along on a hike and don’t take up much room in your bag.
When having any kind of outdoor adventure, be sure to follow the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace! These principles (Plan Ahead & Prepare, Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces, Trash Your Trash & Pick Up Pet Waste, Leave What You Find, Be Careful With Fire, Keep Wildlife Wild, and Be Mindful in Shared Spaces) are simple guidelines that can help make your next adventure better for you, other travelers, and wildlife.
Truly enjoy your hike! While you wander in nature, allow your mind to wander too. Enjoy the peacefulness of the outdoors, the sounds of birds and chittering squirrels, the cool breeze and sunshine, the smell of pine needles or wildflowers, and the mist of a waterfall or bubbling stream.
Once you come back home, happy and refreshed from your hike outdoors, share you experience with others! Encourage your friends and family to explore these beautiful trails. Now that you’re true hiking enthusiast, show some pride in these PA Wilds places by purchasing a t-shirt! It will spark connections with other hikers, and your purchase helps benefit local entrepreneurs who live and work in this rural region.
