Stephanie Distler's Simple Recipes: Browned butter chocolate chip and pretzel cookies

A recipe from artisan Stephanie Distler

Artisans are hard-working, dedicated makers who spend their time handcrafting beautiful creations! These folks deserve a special, sweet treat!

Don't worry... even if you're not an artisan yourself, you deserve a treat too. Feel free to use this recipe from Stephanie to bake some delectable cookies for yourself, your family, or your friends!

Stephanie Distler originally posted this recipe for "Browned Butter Chocolate Chip and Pretzel Cookies" on her blog in April 2015. It's a favorite recipe with lots of interconnecting flavors, but all of the ingredients are easy to come by and probably already in your pantry.

Although the recipe is relatively simple, it's sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

However, make sure that you give yourself enough time. Browning butter is worthwhile for a deeper flavor, but it does take some time and patience.

Just as artisans have to have patience when they create their products, these cookies take a little bit of extra time and care. As you brown the butter and gently stir the pot to ensure it browns but doesn't burn, take that time to relax and be in the moment.

  • 2 eggs plus 1 yolk
  • 2 tsp vanilla

  • 2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • Preheat oven to 350º Fahrenheit.
  • Line your cookie sheets with Silpats or parchment paper.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt 1 cup unsalted butter over medium heat, this takes around 20 minutes be patient for the browned butter makes the cookie.  When butter is melted, continue to cook, stirring butter constantly until it becomes a light caramel color.  Remove from heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
  • In bowl of stand mixer, mix butter and sugar until combined, then add eggs, one at at time, extra yolk and vanilla.  Continue mixing until light in color, making for a thicker batter.
  • Add in baking soda, salt and flour.  Mix on low until combined, then mix in crushed pretzels and nut mixture, then semi-sweet chocolate chips with your wooden spoon.
  • Using medium cookie scoop, 2 ounce, drop dough on lined baking sheet about 2 inches apart, baking until just golden at the edges, about 8-10 minutes.  Centers might not seem done, but, remove the cookies and allow to cool for 3-4 minutes on baking sheet before moving to your wire racks to finish cooling.
  • Tip:  to quickly crush nuts, place in a heavy plastic bag and smash with your rolling pin :)
